What are the Different Varieties of Leek Seeds?

Kings Seeds offers leek varieties perfect for any New Zealand garden. Choose between our slender Mediterranean variety, the perfect tasty baby leek, the heirloom Winter Giant for great flavour and dependability or our organic variety, Carentan Giant, all which thrive in cool temperatures. Each variety promises leeks with exceptional taste, a versatile vegetable for soups, quiches, risotto and many other dishes.

When Should I Plant Leek Seeds?

For successful growth, sow leek seeds into seed raising trays from summer through to autumn. When seedlings are large enough, normally 10-12 weeks old, transplant into deep holes or mound the soil around the stems to promote a longer white shank or stem. Plant in an area with good air-flow as leeks can be prone to rust.

How Do You Know When Leeks Are Ready to be Harvested?

Leeks are ready for harvest once their stems reach a usable thickness, generally 3-6cm in diameter depending on your preference for a baby leek or a larger mature leek. This typically occurs 90-120 days after planting, depending on the variety and growing conditions. Gently lift the leek from the soil without disrupting the roots of adjacent plants. Harvesting at the right time ensures peak flavour and texture.
