Tomato seeds can be sown indoors in New Zealand during late winter or early spring and planted out after the last frost in your location to ensure successful growth. Generally, the optimal time for sowing indoors is from August to October, and planting outdoors during October and November when the soil has warmed sufficiently. Seedlings will take around 6-8 weeks to be of a size for planting in the garden, so count back the weeks from your last frost and this is when you should sow your seed. Ensure tomato seedlings are planted into well-drained soil in a sunny spot to ensure fruit will ripen fully. By sowing your seed at the right time for your location you can enjoy a bountiful tomato harvest during the summer months.
The maturation rate of tomatoes will differ between varieties. However, tomato seeds generally take 5 to 10 days to germinate, depending on the soil, warmth and moisture levels. Once germinated, the seedlings take 40 to 60 days to grow to a size where they can be planted in the garden. Once planted, it may take around 80 to 90 days for the fruit to develop and ripen, depending on the tomato variety and growing conditions. Factors like regular watering, sufficient sunshine hours and nutrient availability play an essential role in the speed of growth and maturation of your tomatoes. With consistent care, gardeners can expect to harvest ripe, delicious tomatoes around three months from planting.
Kings Seeds offers an impressive selection of tomato seeds to suit different tastes and climates. Choose from classic heirloom varieties like Roma or experiment with exciting hybrid tomatoes for unique flavours and shapes. Cherry tomatoes offer a sweet, bite-sized option, while beefsteak tomatoes provide great-tasting tomatoes for sandwiches and to make into sauce. Certified organic seeds provide a chemical-free option to ensure sustainability. Each type of tomato variety delivers excellent flavour making it easy to find the right variety for any garden. Grow your favourite tomatoes with Kings Seeds today.
