Young Growers Award Terms and Conditions 

Effective September 2026 

1. About the Young Growers Award 

The Young Growers Award is a Kings Seeds initiative celebrating children and young people throughout New Zealand who are discovering, sharing or encouraging the joy of gardening and growing from seed. 

Up to one recipient may be selected each month. The selected recipient may be an individual young grower or an eligible children’s group. 

Kings Seeds may choose not to present the award in any month if no suitable nomination is received. 

2. Who can be nominated? 

The Young Growers Award is open to: 

• Individual children and young people aged 1–18. 
• School classrooms. 
• Early childhood education centres and groups. 
• Organised homeschooling groups. 
• Children’s community, educational or gardening groups. 
• Other legitimate New Zealand groups primarily involving children or young people aged 1–18. 

Individual nominees must live in New Zealand. Group nominees must be based and operate within New Zealand. 

Children and young people must participate at a level appropriate for their age and abilities, with suitable adult support and supervision. 

3. Who can submit a nomination? 

Nominations must be submitted by an adult aged 18 or over who knows the nominee and will be directly involved in supporting or coordinating the growing project. 

Eligible nominators may include: 

• A parent or caregiver. 
• A grandparent. 
• A legal guardian. 
• A teacher or educator. 
• A homeschooling parent or educator. 
• A group organiser, coordinator or authorised representative. 
• Another adult directly responsible for the child’s care, learning or participation. 

Where the nominator is not the child’s parent or legal guardian, they must have permission from the child’s parent or guardian before submitting the nomination. 

Teachers, educators and group organisers must also have the appropriate authority or permission from their school, centre, group or organisation. 

Any personal, family, employment, ambassador or commercial connection to Kings Seeds must be disclosed in the nomination. 

4. Awareness and permission 

The young grower, their parent or legal guardian and any relevant teacher, group organiser or organisation must know about the nomination and be willing to participate. 

Please do not nominate a child, family, teacher, classroom or group without discussing the Young Growers Award with them first. 

By submitting a nomination, the nominator confirms that: 

• The information supplied is true and accurate. 
• The appropriate people know about and support the nomination. 
• The recipient has suitable time, space and adult support to use the award. 
• The nominator is authorised to provide the information submitted. 
• The nominator will help coordinate delivery and use of the growing pack if the nominee is selected. 
• The nominator understands that a growing update and project photographs will be requested if the nominee is selected. 

5. How to submit a nomination 

Email nominations to grow@kingsseeds.co.nz with “Young Growers Award Nomination” in the subject line. 

The nomination should include: 

• The nominator’s full name, email address and phone number. 
• The nominator’s relationship to the nominee. 
• The young grower’s first name or the group’s name. 
• The age of the individual nominee or age range of the group. 
• The number of children who would participate. 
• The nominee’s town or region. 
• A short explanation of why the young grower or group would enjoy or benefit from this opportunity. 
• What they would like to grow, contribute or learn. 
• Details of the growing space available. 
• The name or role of the adult who will supervise and support the project. 
• Confirmation that the nominee knows about the nomination and has sufficient time and support to participate. 
• Any relevant information Kings Seeds should consider when tailoring the award. 

Kings Seeds may contact the nominator to request further information before making a selection. 

A delivery address will only be requested if the nominee is selected. 

6. How recipients are selected 

Nominations will be reviewed by the Kings Seeds General Manager and Partnerships Manager. 

Selection may consider: 

• The nominee’s interest, curiosity or enthusiasm for gardening. 
• The opportunity for the award to create a meaningful growing experience. 
• The proposed growing project or learning outcome. 
• The nominee’s gardening contribution or how they encourage others to grow. 
• The growing space and resources available. 
• The level of adult support available. 
• The suitability of the award for the nominee. 
• The potential benefit to the individual or group. 
• Alignment with the purpose and values of Kings Seeds. 

Previous gardening experience is not required. 

The decision of Kings Seeds is final, and no correspondence regarding the selection process will be entered into. 

Submitting a nomination does not guarantee that an award will be presented. 

7. How long nominations remain eligible 

Nominations will be considered as they are received and may be retained for consideration during the following three monthly selection rounds. 

After this period, a new nomination may be submitted if the young grower or group remains interested and able to participate. 

Kings Seeds may contact the nominator to confirm that the nominee’s circumstances have not changed before reconsidering an earlier nomination. 

8. Award value and contents 

An individual Young Growers Award will include a growing pack with a retail value of approximately NZ$50. 

A group Young Growers Award will include a growing pack with a retail value of approximately NZ$100. 

Each growing pack will be tailored where practical to suit the recipient’s: 

• Age or age range. 
• Number of participants. 
• Growing experience. 
• Available space. 
• Location. 
• Interests. 
• Intended project. 
• Seasonal growing conditions. 

Individual growing packs may include seeds, children’s gardening gloves, colourful gardening tools, sprouting equipment, growing resources, a Kings Seeds catalogue featuring the Annual Seed Sowing Guide, an activity sheet and a Young Growers certificate. 

Group growing packs may include larger seed selections, propagation trays, Jiffy pellets or other seed-raising supplies, gardening gloves, growing resources, a Kings Seeds catalogue featuring the Annual Seed Sowing Guide, a group activity sheet and a Young Growers certificate. 

The exact value and contents of each growing pack may vary. 

Products shown in Young Growers Award advertising are examples only. Specific products, seed varieties, quantities, colours and pack contents are not guaranteed. 

Kings Seeds may substitute products depending on availability, suitability, safety, group size and seasonal growing conditions. 

9. Accepting and receiving the award 

Kings Seeds will contact the nominator or responsible adult before publicly announcing the selected recipient. 

Acceptance and delivery details must be confirmed within seven days of contact. If Kings Seeds cannot confirm the recipient’s participation within this period, another recipient may be selected. 

The selected parent, legal guardian or authorised representative may also be required to complete the Young Growers Image and Story Consent Form before any information or imagery relating to the recipient is published. 

The growing pack: 

• Can only be delivered to a valid New Zealand address. 
• Cannot be exchanged for cash. 
• Cannot be returned for store credit. 
• Cannot be transferred or sold. 
• Must be used for the young grower or group named in the nomination. 

Kings Seeds is not responsible for delays caused by incomplete or incorrect delivery information or circumstances outside its reasonable control. 

10. Recipient and nominator responsibilities 

If selected, the nominator or another approved responsible adult agrees to: 

• Receive or coordinate delivery of the growing pack. 
• Help the recipient understand and use the products provided. 
• Provide suitable, age-appropriate supervision. 
• Help the recipient make a genuine attempt to sow, grow and care for something from the pack. 
• Follow the instructions supplied with seeds, tools and growing products. 
• Send Kings Seeds a short update about the growing experience. 
• Supply at least one suitable photograph of the growing project that Kings Seeds may share publicly. 

The update should generally be supplied within 12 weeks of receiving the growing pack, or within another timeframe agreed with Kings Seeds. 

A successful harvest or perfect growing result is not required. Weather, pests, seasons and other gardening conditions may affect the outcome. Kings Seeds is interested in the complete growing experience, including what the recipient discovered or learned along the way. 

Photographs do not need to show children’s faces. Images of hands sowing, seedlings, garden spaces, plants, flowers or harvested produce are welcome. 

11. Growing updates, photographs and permission 

Young Growers recipients will be asked to provide Kings Seeds with a short update and at least one photograph showing their growing project.

By providing a written update, photograph or video to Kings Seeds in connection with the Young Growers Award, the sender gives Kings Seeds permission to edit, reproduce and publish that material for purposes connected with the Young Growers Award and the promotion of gardening. This may include use on the Kings Seeds website, email newsletters, social media channelsand printed promotional material. 

The sender confirms that they created the material or have permission from its creator to provide it to Kings Seeds. 

Where an identifiable child under 18 appears in supplied material, the person providing it must be the child’s parent or legal guardian, or must confirm that the necessary parent or legal guardian permission has been obtained. 

Schools, ECE centres, groups and organisations are responsible for ensuring they have the necessary permission for every identifiable child appearing in material they provide. 

Kings Seeds will generally use only a child’s first name, general age or age range, general location and school or group name, where appropriate permission has been provided. Sensitive personal information will not be published. 

If material is being supplied as a private progress update only and must not be published, the sender must clearly state this when providing it. 

Permission for future use may be withdrawn by emailing grow@kingsseeds.co.nz. Withdrawal will not require Kings Seeds to recall material that has already been printed, distributed or published. 

12. Photograph ownership 

The person supplying a photograph, video or written contribution must: 

• Own the material or have permission from its owner to provide it to Kings Seeds. 
• Have the authority to grant Kings Seeds permission to use it. 
• Confirm that all necessary permissions have been obtained from identifiable people shown or referred to. 

The specific permissions granted to Kings Seeds will be recorded in the Young Growers Image and Story Consent Form. 

13. Safety and supervision 

A responsible adult must supervise children while they use gardening tools, seeds, seed-raising products and other items included in the growing pack. 

All products must be used for their intended purpose and in accordance with the instructions supplied. 

The supervising adult is responsible for assessing whether each activity and product is appropriate for the age, abilities and circumstances of the participating children. 

Seeds must not be eaten unless they are specifically supplied and labelled for sprouting or edible use and have been grown and prepared according to the relevant instructions. 

14. Withholding or withdrawing an award 

Kings Seeds may withhold or withdraw a Young Growers Award if: 

• Information supplied in the nomination is false, incomplete or misleading. 
• The nominee is found to be ineligible. 
• The necessary parent, guardian or organisational permission has not been obtained. 
• The recipient was nominated without their knowledge. 
• The recipient no longer has the time, space or support required to participate. 
• The nominator or recipient cannot be contacted. 
• Acceptance or delivery information is not provided within the required timeframe. 
• Providing or publicising the award would create an identified safety, privacy or reputational risk. 
• The recipient or nominator does not comply with these terms and conditions. 

Where appropriate, Kings Seeds may select another recipient. 

15. Privacy 

Personal information collected through the Young Growers Award nomination and consent processes will be used to: 

• Administer and assess nominations. 
• Verify eligibility, authority, permission and suitability. 
• Contact nominators and selected recipients. 
• Tailor and deliver growing packs. 
• Arrange growing updates and approved publicity. 
• Maintain appropriate programme and consent records. 

Personal information will be handled in accordance with the Kings Seeds Privacy Policy and applicable New Zealand privacy law. 

Information and imagery will only be published for the purposes explained to the person providing consent and within the permissions recorded in the Young Growers Image and Story Consent Form. 

Kings Seeds will retain personal information and consent records only for as long as reasonably required for the purposes for which they were collected or to meet applicable legal and administrative requirements. 

16. Changes to the initiative 

Kings Seeds may amend, pause, extend or withdraw the Young Growers Award when reasonably necessary. 

Any significant changes will apply from the date they are published on the Kings Seeds website and will not affect an award that has already been accepted unless required for safety, legal or operational reasons.
