Giant sunflowers are great for making a statement in the garden, while dwarf sunflowers are ideal for smaller spaces or adding a splash of colour in pots on your patio. By mixing both types, you can enjoy an impressive display of different heights that suits your garden.
In New Zealand, sunflower seeds are best sown between October and February. During these months, warmer weather and longer days provide the ideal conditions for strong sunflower growth. Once the soil has reached over 20°C and frost is no longer a risk, sow sunflower seeds directly into the garden or containers. Sunflowers love full sun, and Kings Seeds stocks a wide range of sunflower varieties well-suited to New Zealand gardens, giving you vibrant blooms right through summer.
To sow sunflower seeds, choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Directly sow them 2-3 cm deep, spacing each around 30 cm apart for room to grow. Keep the soil moist during germination, and within 7-14 days, seedlings should appear. Sunflowers thrive when planted in warmer conditions, with flowers typically forming 60–75 days after sowing.
Sunflowers need plenty of direct sunlight to grow well. Aim for at least six hours of sunlight each day to encourage healthy stems and strong flowers for these sun-loving plants. When you plant sunflower seeds in a sunny spot, it ensures the seeds get the warmth and light they need to flourish. Growing in full sunlight also promotes stronger stems and more vibrant blooms. Kings Seeds’ sunflower seeds are perfect for bright, sunny locations, ensuring you get the best results from your garden.
Sunflower seeds grow best in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Whether grown in beds or large pots, they need consistent access to light throughout the day. Ensure the soil is nutrient-rich to support their rapid growth and space them well to allow the plants to spread. With Kings Seeds’ sunflower seeds, you can enjoy flowers that are perfectly suited to New Zealand’s growing conditions, making them an ideal choice for gardeners looking to brighten up their space with vibrant blooms.
