When to Plant Kale Seeds

Planting kale seeds in New Zealand is best done in late summer through autumn and late winter to early spring. Sowing your kale seeds in these months ensures the kale grows during the cooler months, kale’s preferred growing conditions. Kale seeds prefer well-prepared soil, enriched with organic compost to boost leaf development and flavour.

How Much Sunlight do Kale Seeds Need?

Kale seeds require reasonable sunlight to develop into healthy plants. A site that receives full sun, ideally six to eight hours per day, is optimal. However, kale can also tolerate partial shade, where sunlight is available for at least four hours. This adaptability makes kale an excellent choice for various garden situations.

How to Harvest Kale

Harvesting times for kale will vary depending on the plant stage you wish to harvest. As kale can be grown as a babyleaf, the leaves can be cut at the base of the young seedling as early as 30-45 days after sowing. Alternatively, kale plants can be grown to maturity and only the outer leaves harvested as required so the plant continues to grow and the harvest period may continue for a couple of months.  For the best eating quality, don’t let leaves get too large or old.
