The maturation rate of cucumbers will differ between varieties. However, cucumber seeds generally take 6 to 10 days to germinate, depending on the soil, warmth and moisture levels. Once germinated, the seedlings take 30 to 50 days to grow to a size where they can be planted in the garden. Once planted it may take around 50 to 70 days for the fruit to develop and grow to a size suitable for harvest. Factors like regular watering, sufficient sunshine hours and nutrient availability play an essential role in the speed of growth and maturation of your cucumbers.
In New Zealand, cucumber seeds should be started in spring, from September to November and planted out after the last frost in your location to ensure successful growth. Begin by sowing seed indoors in trays while temperatures are still cool, and transplant seedlings once the weather warms. Seedlings will take around 4-6 weeks to be of a size for planting in the garden, so count back the weeks from your last frost and this is when you should sow your seed. Ensure cucumber seedlings are planted into well-drained soil in a sunny spot to ensure fruit will ripen fully. By sowing your seed at the right time for your location you can enjoy fresh cucumbers all summer long.
Growing methods for cucumber seeds may differ depending on the variety. For specific growing instructions be sure to consult the online product information for each cucumber variety. Generally, you should sow cucumber seeds in seed-raising mix in trays and then transplant them into the garden after the risk of frost has passed. Cucumbers like well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight and warmth. Space your cucumber plants about 60 cm apart, allowing room for plants to grow. Keep soil moist and fertilise regularly to encourage strong growth. Cucumbers can grow on trellises or along the ground. Harvest regularly to enjoy fresh, crisp cucumbers throughout the season.
