As a 100% NZ-owned family business with over 45 years of expertise, we provide larkspur and delphinium varieties that thrive in New Zealand gardens. Larkspur and Delphinium flowers produce tall spires perfect for cut flower arrangements or to add height and colour to borders and cottage gardens. Kings Seeds supplies premium larkspur and delphinium seeds backed by expert advice, helping gardeners sow confidently and enjoy lasting flower displays.
The terms delphinium and larkspur are often used interchangeably, but technically, larkspur is the common name for many plants within the genus Delphinium. While all larkspurs are Delphiniums, not all Delphiniums are commonly called larkspur. The distinction often lies in whether the plant is an annual (called larkspur) or a perennial (called delphinium). True delphiniums are perennials that return each year, while larkspur produces a bloom and then completes its lifecycle. Both plants have very similar features with tall flower spikes, yet larkspur flowers often appear finer with foliage, making them ideal for cut-and-dry use. Delphinium flowers grow on robust stems and create strong displays across borders. Gardeners can choose larkspur seeds for quick seasonal colour, while delphinium seeds suit those seeking longer-lasting perennial impact. Kings Seeds provides both delphinium and larkspur seeds, ensuring Kiwi gardens can showcase striking flowers across multiple growing seasons.
Larkspur seeds thrive in slightly cooler conditions, so sowing in early spring, from September to January, generally works best across New Zealand. Direct sowing is recommended for this flower type. Larkspur seeds require soil temperatures between 15-21°C to germinate successfully, meaning gardeners in warmer northern areas may benefit from autumn sowing, while southern regions can sow in spring. With proper timing, larkspur flowers will bloom beautifully during summer, producing striking flower stems that complement borders.
Where is the Best Place to Plant Larkspur?
Larkspur seeds perform best when planted in sunny, well-drained garden beds. Larkspur flowers generally reach 90–120 cm tall, so place them at the back of borders or against fences to avoid shading shorter plants. Choose a sunny but sheltered spot with protection from strong winds, which can damage the tall stems. Gardeners often mix larkspur flowers with perennials such as delphinium to create dramatic layered borders. Kings Seeds, provides quality larkspur seeds to help gardens flourish with height, colour and elegance.
For best results, delphinium flowers need full sun, though light afternoon shade helps in hot northern areas. Delphinium seeds germinate well when started in trays, then transplanted outdoors once conditions settle. These flowers will grow into tall plants, usually reaching between 120-150cm. Spikes of delphinium flowers may need staking, especially in exposed gardens, to protect the stems from wind. With proper care, delphiniums create a beautiful vertical structure and vivid colour in garden borders. Kings Seeds supplies a range of vibrant delphinium seeds trusted by NZ gardeners who value expert advice and high-quality seeds.
