Calendula

Calendula ointment is great for dry, chapped lips over summer.

Empty a 100g container of Vaseline into a bowl and place in a saucepan of water on low heat.

When it has melted, add 30g of Calendula petals and simmer over a low heat for 10 minutes.

Then strain out the petals and pour the Vaseline into a glass container before it cools. Allow to cool, put the lid on, label and date.

Chamomile

A chamomile compress is great for eyes in need of relief.

For eyestrain, inflammation and conjunctivitis, steep 2-3 tablespoons of chamomile flowers in freshly boiled water.

Cover with a lid and steep for 15 minutes. Cool until warm, then strain off the flowers and soak a flannel or soft cloth in the infusion.

Gently squeeze out excess fluid and apply to closed eyes while lying down. Chamomile tea bags can also be used in this way.

Dandelion

Dandelion roots make a good liver tonic. Dig dandelion roots in autumn from 2 year old plants.

Rinse under running water and dry in the sun.

Roast the roots lightly in the oven until brown, then chop and grind to a fine consistency.

Use about a teaspoon of ground root to each cup of boiled water. Steep for 5 minutes, then strain and add milk. Chicory root can also used in this way.

Thyme

A useful gargle for tonsilitis, mouth ulcers and as a wash for infected skin.

Make an infusion using 30g dried thyme or 60g fresh leaves and 600ml hot water. The longer it is left to steep, the stronger it will be.

Allow to cool and gargle 3-4 times per day. Discard after 24 hours.
