Can You Grow Amaranth in NZ?

Gardeners across New Zealand can successfully grow Amaranth because the warm summer climate suits this plant. Amaranth thrives in free-draining soils with good sun exposure, with an optimum soil temperature for germination around 20 - 30°C. Amaranth grows well in flower beds, kitchen plots, or even larger containers, with striking foliage and flowering plumes for floral work or to provide interest to your garden.  A versatile plant with edible options for microgreens, salad leaves or to be grown for grain. Amaranth seeds germinate relatively quickly under the right conditions in NZ, making them ideal for experienced growers and beginners. Refer to the online product information for each variety for specific instructions and tips for growing amaranth and amaranthus in NZ.

Is Amaranth Easy to Grow From Seed?

Amaranth grows easily from seed when planted in warm soil. Sow directly into garden beds after frost risk passes or start seedlings indoors for earlier planting. Amaranth seeds germinate relatively quickly within 7-14 days. Keeping soil moist during the early stages of growth helps seedlings establish properly. Amaranth thrives with minimal maintenance once roots develop, needing sunshine, warmth and space.

How Long Does it Take to Grow Amaranth?

Amaranth and amaranthus varieties grow quickly from seed. Amaranth seeds will germinate within 7 to 14 days and mature for microgreens approximately 35 days from direct sowing. For salad leaves amaranth will be ready to harvest around 50 days from direct sowing and for flowering plants 75 - 90 days. A versatile plant harvest microgreen and salad leaf varieties and enjoy them as garnishes and in salads. For flowering types use as a textural element in floral work or just enjoy in the garden. Kings Seeds offers varieties designed for both ornamental and edible use.

How Often Should I Water Amaranth?

Amaranth needs consistent moisture during germination, so water lightly each day until seeds sprout. Once plants establish, reduce watering to deep soakings two or three times weekly, depending on rainfall. Amaranth grows best in well-drained soil where roots can access nutrients without being waterlogged. Amaranthus flowers remain stronger and more vibrant when plants avoid stress from irregular watering.
