As with all stocks, the real drawcard is the fragrance: an intensely sweet, clove-like scent that makes a single stem enough to perfume a whole room.

The blooms are edible too, so beyond arrangements, there's scope to use them as an aromatic garnish. To get the most from Iron Purple as a cut flower, harvest once about half of the flowers on a stem have opened, which sets you up for a vase life of 7-10 days.

With two sowing windows through the year, Iron Purple offers flexibility for succession planting, so you can keep that deep purple colour and fragrance coming at different times in the garden.

Growing Stock Iron Purple

Surface sow from March through to May, or again from July through to September, at a germination temperature of 15-20°C, with seedlings appearing in 7-14 days.
