native-inland-restoration
Native Inland Restoration

Away from the coast, New Zealand's inland landscapes call for a different mix of native species, ones suited to forest margins, farmland, reserves and lifestyle blocks rather than salt and sea spray. The Native Inland Restoration collection brings together five such species, chosen to support biodiversity and rebuild resilient natural environments away from the coastline.

Mountain Flax (Wharaiki) is a smaller, more compact relative of the common coastal flax, often found in inland and higher-altitude sites, and it brings the same useful qualities of structure and nectar for birds in a tidier form. NZ Iris (Mikoikoi) is a clumping, strappy-leaved plant that produces cheerful yellow and white flowers, and does particularly well in damp or seasonally wet ground. Coprosma (Karamu) is a fast-growing native shrub that produces orange berries relished by native birds, making it a useful, quick-establishing addition to any restoration planting. Akeake is a hardy small tree well suited to dry, windy or exposed inland sites, often used in shelterbelt plantings for its toughness. Kanuka completes the collection as a fast-establishing pioneer tree that provides shelter for slower-growing species to follow.

Together, these five plants cover a useful range of inland conditions, from the damp, low-lying ground favoured by mikoikoi through to the drier, more exposed sites where akeake and kanuka thrive. This variety makes the collection adaptable to different parts of a property, rather than suited to just one type of site.

This kind of mixed native planting does real work in the landscape. Karamu and mikoikoi provide food and habitat for birds and insects relatively quickly, while akeake and kanuka establish a hardier structural framework that improves shelter and soil stability as the planting matures. Over time, a planting like this becomes increasingly selfsustaining, needing less intervention as the plants settle in and begin supporting one another.

For farms, lifestyle blocks, reserves or forest margins, the Native Inland Restoration collection offers a straightforward way to start rebuilding habitat and biodiversity inland, using species that are well matched to New Zealand's inland growing conditions rather than generic garden plants.

Grow native.
