botry-zen
BOTRY-Zen

Fungal diseases like botrytis, rust and brown rot can undo months of careful growing in a matter of days, and Botry-Zen offers a biological way to keep them in check. Developed from research by Plant & Food Research and produced by the New Zealand company Botryzen, it is a biological control agent used on garlic and ornamentals to combat rust, and on fruiting and vegetable plants to prevent brown rot, blight, grey mould and white mould.

Its active ingredient, Ulocladium oudemansii, is a naturally occurring fungus that works by colonising decaying plant tissue and outcompeting disease-causing pathogens at their source, rather than acting as a conventional chemical fungicide. This means it protects against Botrytis cinerea, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Monilinia by getting there first, denying these pathogens the foothold they need to establish and spread.

Timing matters with a biological product like this. It is best applied early in the season, in warm and humid conditions above 15 degrees Celsius, when disease pressure is building, or immediately post-flowering, when many fruiting crops become vulnerable to botrytis and brown rot. Because it works through natural competition rather than toxicity, it is a good fit for organic gardens and anyone wanting to reduce their reliance on conventional fungicides.

For home gardeners battling recurring grey mould on strawberries, brown rot in stone fruit, or rust on garlic, Botry-Zen offers a proven, naturally derived way to get ahead of the problem.

Using Botry-Zen

Apply as a spray early in the season during warm, humid conditions, or post-flowering when fruiting crops are most vulnerable to botrytis and brown rot. Mix with water according to the rate on the packaging and apply thoroughly to foliage and flowers for best coverage.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0729/0555/6276/files/A0086-W_1473988e-21c0-450e-be3d-4642d0238f0e.png?v=1784752304
