Sugar Beet
- Botanical Name: Beta vulgaris var altissima
The alternative to sugar cane that doesnt require the tropics to grow. Cultivated as a commercial crop since the 1750s in Poland, this beet is still grown around the world for the extraction of its sugar content. Also ideal for sweetening preserves by putting a few slices in the tin or bottle, in making home wine and as a high energy crop for animals. Sow early spring or autumn to avoid summer bolting.
