Kohlrabi Early Purple Vienna
- Botanical Name: Brassica oleracea gongylodes
Kohlrabi is both attractive and unusual. The edible part is the fat Turnip-like swollen stem just above the soil level. This is best eaten when not much larger than 7.5cm in diameter. It has a pleasant delicate nutty flavour served raw in salads, stir fried for Asian dishes or cooked like Turnips. The purple stems of this old Vienna variety are always a delight to the eye, while the tender white inner flesh is a pleasure to the palate. It is slow to bolt, and does as well in summer as it does in autumn.
Heirloom; 10-20 degrees; 5-10 days; 25cm apart ; Cooler Temps; 1.2.3; Direct Sow; 1000 seeds; European Cuisine.
