Caper Bush

  • Botanical Name: Capparis spinosa enermis
Classic Mediterranean coastal plant that has born the capers of commerce since Ancient Greek times. A semi-thornless species, this variety forms a low mounding shrub with arching red stems and dark green semi-succulent leaves. From late spring until autumn plants bear a profusion of flower buds which are picked in the morning before opening. Left unpicked these buds form delicately scented pinkish white flowers that open up and then close at night. Plants enjoy harsh dry conditions thriving in lean well drained soil in a hot sunny location with little or no water, treated much like cacti. Stratify seed for 2-3 weeks in the fridge - in the seed packet is just fine.  Then soak seeds overnight in warm water before sowing in coarse sandy medium. Keep slightly moist but not soaked. Germinates erratically, taking from 3 weeks to 3 months, Expect flowering in the second year with plants enjoying a pruning and possibly living for decades.

Heirloom; 16-20 degrees; 21-90days; 60-90cm; Tender; 1.2.3; Transplant; 100 seeds; Gourmet.
